Building the foundation of Canada’s chicken supply

The Canadian Hatching Egg Producers (CHEP) play a vital role in ensuring a dependable supply of quality broiler hatching eggs to hatcheries across the country. Working closely with provincial boards, producers, and hatcheries, CHEP manages production through a coordinated system that supports stability and long-term growth. Their work helps ensure that Canadian chicken production remains reliable, efficient, and responsive to market demand. Together with their partners, CHEP is focused on strengthening domestic capacity and producing more food here at home for Canadians.

Supporting a stable and resilient food system

CHEP plays a foundational role in Canada’s food system by supplying the hatching eggs that become the chicks raised by Canadian chicken farmers. As part of Canada’s supply-managed poultry sector, the organization helps ensure a stable, predictable, and domestically driven supply of chicken.

Through collaboration across the value chain, CHEP supports production planning, animal health, and strong biosecurity practices. This coordinated approach helps the sector respond to challenges while maintaining a consistent food supply. In an increasingly uncertain global environment, CHEP’s role is to help ensure Canadians can continue to rely on food produced here at home.

Did you know?

Many Canadians are surprised to learn that hatching eggs are not the eggs found in grocery stores. They are a critical first step in the chicken supply chain, playing an essential role in ensuring a reliable supply of chicken raised in Canada.

It’s also not widely known how closely coordinated this system is. CHEP works daily with provincial boards and hatcheries to align production with market needs, ensuring the right amount of supply is available at the right time, without overproduction or shortages. This level of coordination is key to maintaining a stable and efficient system.

Highlight initiative: Strengthening Canada’s chicken supply

In 2025, CHEP worked with provincial hatching egg boards and hatcheries to establish a historic five-year agreement.

Developed in response to increasing uncertainty, including challenges such as avian influenza, shifting trade conditions, and potential supply chain disruptions, this agreement provides greater flexibility for producers to increase production when needed, while maintaining overall system stability.

In practical terms, it helps ensure more chicken can be raised in Canada, strengthens the domestic food supply chain, and supports a reliable supply of Canadian-produced food for Canadian families.

Proud CCFI member since 2020

As a member of the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity (CCFI) since 2020, CHEP contributes to a broader effort to build public trust in Canada’s food system. Their commitment to collaboration, transparency, and long-term planning reflects the values shared across CCFI’s membership.
